the beauty of second use

this image is a picture of a copy of a drawing of 2 images from a magazine, so the images from the magazines are probably copies of the original, so how many copies of a copy are there? and you are seeing it after it went into my computer through photoshop and into this blog. multiple generations, and i actually like this image best?!?
richard price talks about the use of others intellectual property should not be considered theft but rather the beauty of second use.

so finally, i moved inside the book and i actually moved onto the page instead of copying or tracing the page. this is a piece i did with a close childhood friend who is an architect, overly ambitious, crazy busy and hugely talented. as i have mentioned before i collect books, catalogs, magazines, ay type of printed matter. this catalog i purchased at printed matters in chelsea during a gallery visit to nyc. i held onto it and even packed to travel with me. i was going away for a few months and knew i wanted to do some sort of work and keep in touch with friends. this piece ended up combining the two. i made a few pencil marks on the pages and mailed off to my friend jane, a month later an envelope arrived with the catalog. jane’s response was stunning, she cut away perfect little squares creating a depth and a lightness. she upped the game. and this is how it went back and forth until we both thought enough.
this piece was auctioned off at Artcetera, Boston this fall.

i spend plenty of time on a bike in the summer preparing myself to ride 200 miles for my cause, the Pan Mass Challenge. sitting on a bike for hours allows me plenty of time to notice the small and intricate, the subtle and sublime and sometimes i even have it in me to record it.
i am not sure how if at all this helps me raise money but it certainly helps me raise my awareness.

repetition, neatly or accidentally…a friend i grew up with is now a very successful architect. we did and still create sometimes together and sometimes side by side.
as in these examples her’s are perfect and mine are less so. neither is right or wrong and of course, we have a bit of envy towards the others way of working, maybe i should just speak for myself.

ever since i was in art school, i have been fascinated by reproduction of work almost as much as seeing them in person. so whenever i go to a museum or a gallery i buy whatever i can afford. the books themselves continue to confound me to why it is they are so seductive and i am not sure i want to find the answer completely. before i moved and put most of these books in storage i decided to make more of a color catalog than putting them in subject or alphabetical order. the black and white, of course i prefer.
pure devotion

just by chance i saw this aldwyth show in charleston, sc.
it was crazy good, tremendously crazy & outrageously pure. “EPIC” is one word that comes to mind and as it seems to many others.
witnessing such a show, during a break away surely sent my head into a tailspin. the immensity, the intensity, the minutia, the detail, the conviction, the control, the shear mass of work and the mass of what makes up the work overwhelmed.
also on this trip i saw “this is it” the micheal jackson movie. same…intensity, immensity, minutia, detail, conviction, control, crazy good.
it both inspires and paralyzes me. does total immersion, devotion and focus come naturally to only some? when does fascination turn into mania? dedication to commitment?
this question seemed to creep in during my trip while watching surfers, kite boarders, windsurfers, birdwatchers, all those people fishing along the coast. obsession? diversion? fascination? does it all come down to passion?
